This Winter/Spring, look out for HIFY workshops on making sex safe, fun and consensual. Learn about homophobia and the queer community. Get the real deal on drug use in our community and how to party safe. Explore relationships and learn how to make them work. Get facts and resources on dealing with HIV and how to protect yourself. HIFY P.E.E.R.S Workshop Descriptions
Puff, Puff, Pass the Knowledge: Substance Use & Harm Reduction
This workshop will give you the tools you need to make the best choices for you about drinking, smoking, and partying with substances. Learn the ups and downs of party drugs, get tips on safe usage, and know what to do if someone is overdosing. Whether you’re a hard-core partier, someone who just likes to kick it, or just want to learn ways to help your friends who go overboard from time to time – this workshops is not fear-based or judgmental. It’s simply helpful and enjoyable. Come pass the knowledge!
Calling It Out: Anti-Homophobia & Ally Building
Do you want to learn more about anti-homophobia? If so, this workshop is for you! This will be a fun, interactive, and educational workshop where you’ll be given a better understanding of homophobia, what it looks like, who it affects, and how to be an ally. We’ll explore what’s really going on when you “holler at someone”, talk about the sneaky ways homophobia creeps into our lives in our “Walk The Line” activity, and have an opportunity to think about how we can all be better allies to our LGBTQIQ friends.
Let’s Understand Sex Together (LUST): Real Talk on Safe and Positive Sex
Sex Sells! But what are we buying? Even if you make the choice not to have sex, it's a part of our world- and we as young people need to be informed on what's out there so we can make the best choices for ourselves. In our workshop you'll get comfortable talking about real sex, learn about STI's and how to prevent them, and hear how to make sex safe, fun and consensual! No glamorous celebrities, no fancy slogans; just helpful, accessible information brought to you by your peers.
Keep It Positive: HIV & Our Community
Wondering why everyone's talking about HIV? With an ever-growing population of HIV positive people in our community, education is the first tool for prevention. Learn all about HIV, how it's transmitted, how you can protect yourself, and how to be an ally to those who are positive. Find out what makes you tick with our "One Night Stand" activity and put your brain to the test with our ultimate Jeopardy challenge! Whether you're positive, negative, or don't know your status, this workshop has something in it for you!

How our Peer Educators are trained...
As peer educators, participants will..
- Receive extensive training in health and harm-reduction around issues of HIV, STDs, contraception, body image, self-esteem, substance use and more!
- Spend 6-weeks in the summertime doing intensive training on various health issues that affect young people in the community
- Spend 5 hrs/week (2 days/week) at HIFY's Oakland site in training and preparing to develop and present workshops around Oakland to high schools, after-school programs, and community-based organizations. (Program will operate on a school-calendar year, September to May, with holidays off).
- Participate in community-building activities, including street outreach (passing out condoms and info to youth), putting on skits, events, discussion nights and movie nights.
