HIFY Publications Workshops
HIFY produces innovative publications for both youth and the adults who work with them. Our survival guides are comprehensive health information books. For those who work with youth, our popular provider's guides combine extensive Bay Area referral listings and practical information. Unfortunately, our zines (Spill, Vital Signs, Reality) have been discontinued. However, if you work with a group of youth, please consider scheduling our NEW Zine-Making workshop series! download a workshop description How to get our publications: A couple of our publications are available online at AK Press: A Young Woman's Survival Guide HIFY publications can be ordered by downloading the order form below, filling it out and mailing it along with your payment to: Publications Orders Folks are more than welcome to drop by at the address above during our business hours to pick up publications. Our hours are generally around 10am-5pm Mon-Fri. In our Adolescent Provider's Guides we pair an extensive resource directory to local adolescent and young adult services with information on topics important to people who work with youth, such as Medi-Cal, mandatory reporting guidelines, and how to navigate the juvenile justice system. We currently have the 2003-2004 edition for San Francisco County (FREE!!!) as well as our 2006/2007 Alameda County Adolescent Provider's Guide!!! Walk Like a Warrior: A Young Man's Survival Guide is a comprehensive reality-based publication written by and for young men. This book explores what it means to be a man, how this affects the choices young men make, and their unique needs regarding their health and well-being. Unfortunately, we have run out of copies of Walk Like a Warrior. We are looking for some funding to reprint the book, so keep checking back for updates. Back by popular demand, this updated version of The Young Woman's Survival Guide (peep the saucy new cover!) is back in stock and available for purchase! Our pamphlets are primarily for our workshops and trainings, but you can also find them wherever we table or do outreach. Unfortunately, we don't take orders for our pamphlets, however, you can come into the office and pick a few up! (Depending on availability) Pretty Girls Vital Signs is written by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth and their allies. This zine features voices from the community, while providing relevant health information and resources often missing from school textbooks. Vital Signs was discontinued in 2003. read selections from Vital Signs Spill is our general youth health zine, tackling a range of health topics through themes such as control, taboos, and rites of passage. Spill was discontinued in 2003. From 1993 to 2000, we published Reality, a zine by and for HIV+ youth. Building a comunity of those living with HIV, young people came together through its pages to share stories and information, to comfort and inspire each other. read selections from the Reality archives In 1998, HIFY published the first ever Thrive Guide, a survival manual for young people newly diagnosed as HIV+. While the treatment information should no longer stand on its own, much of the emotional territory it covers remains starkly relevant. Bridges, our provider newsletter, was produced from 1995 to 2003. This newsletter blended research-based best practices with provider interviews and highlights of the latest research. Back issues cover HIV, cutting, faith-based sexuality education, mental health for immigrant youth, transgender and intersex youth, positive sexuality, and youth empowerment.
