Guía de salud para la MUJER: Mujeres Unidas Jovenes En Resistencia
During the first phase of this project HIFY and La Clínica selected young Latina women to apply for the book's Youth Editorial Board. The Youth Editorial Board was comprised of a group of young Latina women who were part of the process of selecting topics and making the book culturally relevant to themselves and their peers. The Youth Editorial Board met once a week from July 2005 through the end of December 2005.
SOBRE EL PROYECTO
Durante la primer fase de este proyecto HIFY y La Clínica seleccionaron jóvenes latinas formando el Comité Juvenil Editorial (CJE) del nuevo libro. El CJE se formó como un grupo de Latinas jóvenes, las cuales han sido parte del proceso de selección de temas para así asegurar que este nuevo libro sea relevante culturalmente a muchachas latinas como ellas. El CJE se reunió un vez por semana entre los principios de julio hasta los mediados de diciembre del 2005.
Youth Editorial Board:
Joanna Carrasco was born in Oakland and is 15 years old. Joanna goes to Fremont High School. She identifies as Xicana. Her family is of Mexican and Guatemalan descent. Her favorite book is Always Running by Luis Rodriguez. She has three sisters. She hopes to go to UC Berkeley. Her advice to other young Latinas is to go to school and to be appreciative of all they give.
Karen Franco lives in Oakland and is 14 years old. Her family immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico. Karen is the youngest in her family and has three older sisters and an older brother. She loves the Raiders and to shop. One of her favorite movies is City of Angels. Her biggest dream is to go to college and be someone important.
Mayra Garibay is 15 years old and hopes to return someday to her hometown in Mexico. She loves Spanish rock and horror movies. Her goal is to continue to support youth in programs similar to La Clínica's Youth Brigade. She hopes to have a career and to one day have a loving and caring family of her own.
Kimberly Gonzalez is of Mexican descent and lives with her family in Oakland. She is 15 years old, and describes herself as curious, fun, and a strong Xicana. She hopes to have a career so that she can help her parents out. She wants young Latinas to know how to value themselves.
Michelle Gonzalez is 17 years old, and lives in Oakland. She loves nature and good food like tamales and pizza. She hopes to graduate from a U.C. She believes young Latinas have dreams, and that they should strived toward making them a reality.
American Rodriguez is a 16 year old Xicana who lives in Oakland. She loves Harry Potter books, all types of music, and to dance. She describes herself as respectable, caring, amicable, and loves to express herself in different ways. Her advice to young Latinas is not to cry over little things.
Natalie Rodriguez is a 21 year old who was born and raised in Oakland. She believes in being the best and most determined Mestiza/Xicana. Some of her favorite books are This Bridge Called My Back and Borderlines. Her most important goal is to have a stable job, have kids, and to be able to provide for them by herself. She believes that the most important advice she can give young Latinas is to value life and what you have and not to let anyone hold you back.
Anabel Terrazas is 14 years old and was born in Oakland. She recently moved to San Leandro where she is a freshman in high school. Her parents are Peruvian and Mexican. She loves cheeseburgers and thinks of herself as curious, fun, and intelligent. She hopes to someday have a good career. She believes that young Latinas should value and love themselves.
Mariela Uribe is 14 years old and lives in Oakland. She identifies as Xicana, and describes herself as easy-going and intelligent. Her favorite color is pink. She loves enchiladas. Her goal is to graduate from a U.C. She hopes that young Latinas accomplish what they most want.
Comité Juvenil Editorial:

Kimberly González es de descendencia Mexicana y vive con su familia en Oakland. Ella tiene 15 años y se describe como curiosa, divertida, y una Xicana fuerte. Ella espera tener una carrera para poder ayudar a sus padres. Kimberly quiere que otras latinas sepan valorarse ellas mismas.
Michelle González tiene 17 años y vive en Oakland. Le encanta la naturaleza y la buena comida como tamales y pizza. Ella espera graduarse de una de las universidades de California. Michelle cree que las jóvenes latinas sí tienen sueños y que deben hacerlos realidad.
América Rodríguez es una Xicana de 16 años que vive en Oakland. Le encantan los libros de Harry Potter y todo tipo de música y le gusta bailar. Se describe como una persona respetuosa, cariñosa y amable y le gusta expresarse en diferentes modos. Sus consejos a otras muchachas latinas es que no lloren por cosas que no valen la pena.
Natalie Rodríguez tiene 21 años, nació y se crió en Oakland. Ella cree en ser la mejor y más determinada Mestiza/Xicana. Algunos de sus libros son This Bridge Called My Back y Borderlines. Su meta más importante es conseguir un trabajo estable, tener hijos y proveer por ellos ella misma. Natalie cree que el consejo mas importante que le puede dar a otras muchachas latinas es el saber valorar la vida y lo que uno tiene, y no dejar que nadie las detenga para atrás.
